poem

What Lurks Out There
By Sloan Woodberry
When the light it is gone and you are all alone the monster comes out to haunt you.
Out of the shadow or from the closet it emerges grinding its teeth.
It flesh is pealing and its eyes are are dead like a rusted saw.
It is clothed in black garments that have been torn and frayed by time.
It grins at you showing it rotted teeth as you sink into your covers.
You wrap yourself in blankets as if they were armor.
This armor gives you courage deep inside, so you thrust away your covers and lunge for the light to expose it.
The light comes flashing so bright, and you turn to watch the beast melt and hiss...
But it's gone, you have conquered a beast that lived deep within.

  1. This is terrific, Sloan. The images are vivid and creeped me out. I could see the monster and feel the terror and the bravery. Plus, you incorporated a rusty saw, so that is just super neat :)

  2. Reminds me of some monsters that used to live in my closet. Scary description but the best part for me is the covers for armor because it's so true.
